You've booked the Siargao land tour — or you're about to. Either way, you want to know exactly what you're getting into: what each stop actually looks like, what to do when you get there, how long you spend, where the real local tips are hidden. This is that guide.
This isn't a generic listing of attractions. This is a complete, hour-by-hour insider breakdown of the Siargao land tour — written by our team who runs these tours from General Luna, week in, week out. Read this before you go, and your day will be significantly better than that of the tourists who didn't.
Before You Leave — The Morning Checklist
Your pick-up time is between 7:30 AM and 8:30 AM. Set your alarm for 6:00 AM. Not because you need a full hour to get ready — but because the first hour of the morning is when most land tour days quietly fall apart for the unprepared.
🩱 Swimwear — you're in the water multiple times. Wear it under your clothes if you can.
🌿 Reef-safe sunscreen — non-negotiable. Regular sunscreen bleaches coral reefs and is increasingly banned at Siargao attractions. Bring your own — the local shops often run out during peak season.
💧 2 litres of water minimum — the van is air-conditioned, but you'll be outside in tropical heat for most of the day. Dehydration is the silent day-ruiner on most Siargao land tours.
💵 Cash in PHP — bring ₱1,500–₱2,000 per person even on the joiner tour (for drinks, souvenirs, optional kayak rental at Sugba). On the private van, budget ₱1,500–₱3,000 per person for entrance fees, lunch, and boat.
👟 Water shoes or grippy sandals — Magpupungko's volcanic rock surface is uneven and occasionally slippery. Flip-flops work but good grip matters.
🎒 Waterproof dry bag — for your phone and passport at Sugba Lagoon. A Ziploc bag is fine in a pinch. Do not bring your phone to the lagoon without protection.
🧴 After-sun lotion — optional but you'll thank yourself by evening.
GCash topped up — accepted nearly everywhere. A backup to cash.
⚠️ The one thing most tourists forget: Check the low-tide schedule for the day before you leave. Magpupungko is only accessible at low tide — we always plan your tour around it, but knowing the timing lets you adjust your energy and expectations for the morning. Ask your driver when you get in the van.
Stop 1 — Secret Beach Malinao (8:30–9:30 AM)
The drive from General Luna to Malinao takes approximately 45–50 minutes. The road is paved and in good condition — enjoy the view of coconut palms lining the road as the island wakes up.
Secret Beach Malinao is not a secret in the TripAdvisor sense — locals know it well. What it is: a genuinely beautiful, genuinely quiet white-sand cove that requires a short 5–10 minute walk through jungle vegetation to reach. No parasols, no beach bars, no vendors selling ₱200 coconuts. Just the beach, the sea, and a handful of other visitors.
What to do here: Swim (the water is calm and shallow), take photos, and breathe. This is intentionally the gentlest stop of the day — a soft opening before the more dramatic stops ahead.
Insider tip: The best photo spot is slightly to the left as you exit the jungle trail, where a small rocky outcrop frames the cove. Go there before the rest of your group does.
Stop 2 — Maasin River (9:30–10:30 AM)
Maasin River is consistently the most underrated stop on the Siargao land tour. After Secret Beach's ocean energy, the river offers something completely different: stillness, shade, jade-green water, and the sound of nothing but birds and gentle current.
The river flows through dense mangrove jungle. A short bamboo raft ride takes you upstream through the canopy — the guide poles you along in silence while the forest closes in around the boat. It lasts 10–15 minutes and costs a small fee on private tours (included in the joiner).
What to do here: Take the raft ride. Swim in the slow river current near the bank. If the BBQ option is available (usually on private van tours), a riverside seafood BBQ breakfast here is one of the best meals you'll eat on Siargao.
Insider tip: Most joiner groups spend exactly 30 minutes here before the driver hurries everyone back to the van. Ask your guide to stay a bit longer — 45 minutes gives you time to actually feel the place rather than just photograph it.
📍 Private van advantage at Maasin: On the private tour, you can request a riverside seafood BBQ breakfast — freshly grilled fish and rice at a small local setup by the water. It costs around ₱200–300 per person and is 100% worth it. Tell us in advance when booking and we arrange it.
Stop 3 — Magpupungko Rock Pools (10:30 AM–12:30 PM)
Magpupungko Rock Pools is the destination that makes the Siargao land tour worth doing, full stop. Nothing else on the island looks like this. Nothing else in the Philippines quite compares.
The pools are natural formations carved over thousands of years into dramatic black volcanic rock on Siargao's northeastern coast, right at the edge of the Pacific Ocean. At low tide, the ocean retreats and leaves behind a series of natural swimming pools — some waist-deep and calm, some larger and wild — connected by channels and rock ledges. The water is clear, warm, and turquoise where it catches the light.
From the edge of the highest rock, you're looking out across the open Pacific. On a clear day, the horizon stretches uninterrupted for thousands of kilometres. It is, without exaggeration, one of the most beautiful natural scenes in the Philippines.
At Magpupungko — The Practical Reality
Entrance fee: Approximately ₱100–150 per person (included in the joiner tour). A small fee is also charged for the walk-in area. Pay at the gate.
Crowds: Peak season (October–January), Magpupungko can get busy between 10 AM and 1 PM when multiple land tour vans arrive simultaneously. Arrive early or late in the window — 10 AM is better than 12 noon.
What to do:
- Swim in the main pool — the largest pool is about 50m across and chest-to-shoulder depth at low tide
- Cliff jump — there's a natural jump point off a rock ledge about 3–4 metres high. Popular, safe, and genuinely fun
- Explore the rock formations — beyond the main pool, smaller channels and pools hide between the rocks. Few tourists venture far from the central area
- Photography — the golden light at 10–11 AM is exceptional. The overhead sun by noon flattens everything
⚠️ Sea snake warning (calm down — it's fine): Occasionally, sea snakes get trapped in the rock pools. They are mildly venomous but not aggressive and will not attack unless handled. If you see one, give it space and let a guide know. They are removed quickly. This happens a few times per month during the right season — don't let it put you off, but do watch where you step.
Lunch — 12:30–1:30 PM
Joiner tour: Lunch is included in ₱2,200. Your guide takes you to a local restaurant near the tour circuit. Typically a set menu of grilled fish or chicken, rice, vegetables, and water. Simple, fresh, and exactly what your body needs after three hours in the sun and sea.
Private van tour — North Dirty Kitchen, Alegria: This is our non-negotiable recommendation for private van clients. North Dirty Kitchen is a small, locally-owned restaurant on the north coast of Siargao — one of the only places on the island where you eat with a direct view of the Pacific Ocean. The food is excellent (grilled seafood, local rice dishes), the prices are local (₱200–350 per person for a full meal), and the atmosphere — open-air, wood tables, mountain backdrop — is exactly what a perfect island lunch should be.
Insider tip: Order the grilled tuna or the seafood sinigang. Both are outstanding. Arrive by 1:30 PM to avoid the brief lunch rush from other private tours.
Stop 4 — Sugba Lagoon (1:30–3:30 PM)
Sugba Lagoon is the most-photographed attraction on Siargao Island, and the photographs do not lie — it is genuinely, extraordinarily beautiful. An emerald-green lagoon set inside a vast mangrove reserve in Del Carmen, reached by a 25–30 minute boat ride through narrow channels that are themselves part of the experience.
The boat ride: The outboard motorboats are loud. Wear a hat and secure loose items. The channel through the mangroves is spectacular — narrow passages between dense green walls, opening suddenly into open water. Arrive at the lagoon from the east side for the best first view.
At the lagoon: The water is clear and warm. The lagoon is large — approximately 100m across the main swimming area. The iconic rope swing and diving platform are at the far end. Activities available on-site (extra charge, not included in private van):
| Activity | Approx. Cost | Worth It? |
|---|---|---|
| Stand-up paddleboard | ₱200–300/hour | ✅ Yes — excellent on calm mornings |
| Kayak rental | ₱200–300/hour | ✅ Yes — explore the lagoon edges |
| Bamboo raft | ₱200 | ⚡ Relaxing, good for photos |
| Cliff jump (platform) | Free | ✅ Absolutely — do it |
| Snorkelling | ₱100–200 gear rental | ✅ The coral near the edges is healthy |
💡 Real talk about Sugba Lagoon: Some visitors are disappointed because they expected deserted paradise. In peak season, the lagoon can have 50–100 tourists at once. The trick: head to the far left or right edges of the lagoon, away from the main platform. The water is just as clear, there are far fewer people, and you can actually float in peace. Our guides always point you in this direction.
Stop 5 — Mountain View Point (3:30–4:00 PM)
By the time the van stops at the mountain viewpoint, you're sun-touched, salt-dried, and deeply satisfied with the day. Everything in your body wants to sleep. Go to the viewpoint anyway.
The panorama of Siargao Island from above — the patchwork of green and turquoise, the lagoons catching the late-afternoon light, the Pacific stretching away to the east — is the image you'll carry home from the land tour. It reframes everything you've experienced since landing. It makes the island make sense.
On the private van (North Siargao circuit): The equivalent is the Coconut View Deck, timed for the golden hour around 5:00–5:30 PM. The view over the coconut forest toward the Pacific at sunset is one of the most beautiful scenes on Siargao. Worth every minute of the extra drive.
Return to General Luna — 4:00–5:00 PM
The joiner tour drops you back at your hotel in General Luna by approximately 4:00–4:30 PM. The private van typically returns between 5:30 and 6:00 PM, with the sunset stop included.
You will be hungry again by arrival. You will also be entirely content. The Siargao land tour is one of those rare days that exceeds what you imagined it would be — if you do it right.

10 Insider Tips for the Perfect Siargao Land Tour
- Book 48 hours ahead in peak season — October to January fills every joiner slot. WhatsApp us as soon as you know your travel dates.
- Check the Magpupungko tide schedule — we do this automatically, but ask your driver in the morning to confirm. Low tide between 9 AM and 1 PM is ideal.
- Wear your swimsuit under your clothes — you'll change in and out of swimwear multiple times. Less faff, more fun.
- Bring a dry bag for your phone — especially at Sugba Lagoon. The jump platform splash zone is merciless.
- At Sugba Lagoon, go to the edges — the far corners of the lagoon are quieter, equally beautiful, and actually swimmable without a crowd.
- Visit Magpupungko as early as possible — tidal pools are best between 9:30 AM and 11:30 AM. The light is better and crowds are thinner.
- Don't skip Maasin River — it's the quietest stop and the one most tourists rush through. Ask your guide for 45 minutes there.
- Hydrate aggressively — you'll be sweating more than you think. Two litres of water is the minimum for a full land tour day in tropical heat.
- On private van: eat at North Dirty Kitchen — tell us when booking. We arrange the stop. It's genuinely the best meal on the north circuit.
- Stay for the Mountain View / Coconut Deck — even if you're exhausted. The view will be the photo you share most.
