Planning a trip to Siargao and wondering if it’s safe? Great question — and here’s everything you need to know to travel with peace of mind.
Siargao is peace and love. The island lives to the rhythm of waves, sun, and smiles.
You'll meet lovely locals, cool expats, and happy backpackers.
✅ No major crime problems
✅ People are honest and friendly
✅ Thefts are very rare (but we still keep an eye out)
🔒 Friend's tip: As everywhere, avoid leaving your bag or phone unattended on the beach or on a tricycle. Better safe than sorry!
This is THE thing to avoid if you don't want to ruin your vacation.
Many travelers rent a scooter (it's logical, it's practical!), but ride without a helmet, in flip-flops, and sometimes drunk... 🫠
❌ Frequent falls
❌ Serious injuries
❌ Insurance hassles if you don't have the right papers
🪖 Local tip: Always wear a helmet, ride calmly, and take out travel insurance that covers both wheels.
You don't need any mandatory vaccinations to come to Siargao.
But here's what I recommend to feel comfortable:
✅ Recommended vaccinations:
Hepatitis A
Typhoid
Tetanus (basic)
Rabies (if you're staying for a long time or want to be 100% safe)
🦟 Malaria or dengue fever?
Don't panic. There are very few cases in Siargao. But the mosquitoes are definitely there.
🧴 Apply mosquito repellent as soon as night falls, especially if you're sleeping near the jungle.
No worries. There are:
Local clinics in General Luna
A hospital in Dapa (30-minute drive)
General practitioners on site
And in case of a serious problem, head to Cebu or Manila
📞 Always keep the number of your guesthouse or a trusted local for emergencies.
Here are some numbers to save just in case:
Emergency / Police: 117
Hospital (Dapa): +63 939 756 9137
General Luna Clinic: +63 920 989 3325
Tourist Assistance: +63 945 278 0934
🌪️ Typhoons?
Yes, typhoons can occur between July and December, but:
🔵 They are rarely severe in Siargao
🔵 Weather warnings are well managed
🔵 Housing is now better built (especially after Typhoon Odette in 2021)
🐍 Snakes or dangerous animals?
You may come across a few lizards, stray dogs, or insects...
But nothing really dangerous. Just use common sense 👣
🤒 Bonus: The most common pitfalls to avoid
1️⃣ Tourista → Avoid tap water. Drink filtered or bottled water.
2️⃣ Extreme sunburn → The sun is HARD. Sunscreen and a hat are a must. 😎
3️⃣ Sand bites → Walking barefoot is fine... but not in tall grass.
✅ In summary: is Siargao safe?
🟢 YES, definitely.
It's a super chill island, with a dreamy atmosphere, where you can travel with peace of mind.
But like everywhere: use common sense, plan ahead, and everything will be fine.
